Couples Counselling

Couples therapy that centres your relationship

Collaborative conversations to understand patterns, strengthen connection, and respond to what matters most to you as partners

Approach to couples therapy

Couples therapy with Michael focuses on the relationship as the client. Sessions explore patterns of interaction, stories you carry about each other and the relationship, the effects of stress and trauma, and the hopes and values you share. The aim is not to find fault with one partner, but to understand how both of you are responding to difficulties and what you would prefer to be happening instead.

Michael draws on non‑pathologizing, narrative, and relational approaches. This means he will be interested in your language, your preferred stories about each other, and the ways in which the relationship has survived or resisted hardship.

What to expect

In early sessions, you will clarify:

  • What brings you to therapy at this time
  • How each of you experiences the current difficulties
  • What you would hope might be different in your relationship
  • Any safety, access, or cultural considerations that are important for you to name

Together, you then work toward shared understandings and next steps that feel workable and respectful for both partners. Some couples come for a few focused sessions; others prefer longer‑term work.

Inclusivity and non-discrimination

This practice welcomes couples and relationships of diverse genders, sexualities, cultural backgrounds, and structures (including non‑traditional and non‑monogamous configurations). Services are provided without discrimination on the basis of personal characteristics protected under the BC Human Rights Code.

You are invited to name the language, pronouns, cultural or spiritual practices, or other forms of support that would make therapy more accessible and fitting for you as partners.

Session letters for couples

After couple sessions, you may receive a therapeutic letter summarizing key themes, turning points, new understandings, and possible steps you have identified together. These letters are written to both of you and are intended to support ongoing reflection and shared conversations between sessions. As with individual work, these letters form part of the clinical record of your care.
